Ingredient of the Month: “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”

When thinking about my top ingredient for the month of January, I wanted to pick something I have been loving this season. So that’s why I picked apples. I know it might sound a bit basic but apples are definitely one of my favourite and most frequent choice for snacking. As one of the most consumed and popular foods, apples are often regarded as a “miracle food”.

Research from The Florida State University found that older women who ate apples everyday had 23% less bad cholesterol (LDL) and 4% more good cholesterol (HDL) after just six months. Apples could also help lower your risk of diabetes. A study involving 187,382 people found that people who ate three servings per week of apples, grapes, raisins, blueberries or pears had a 7% lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes compared to those who did not.

While these health benefits are one of the reasons as to why I love apples one factor which has contributed to my love for apples is their versatility. There are over 25 different varieties of apples which can be used in many different dishes such as apple pies or apple tarts. Furthermore apples can even be used as an accompaniment to savoury dishes such as pork and apple sauce.
